Proposed Project

Narrows Playground

The Narrows day use area is a popular place for people to gather to use the camp kitchen, fire ring, swim beach and picnic tables. The nearby Narrows Campground hosts 85 campsites and sees a steady stream of campers during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Currently, a traditional swing set is the only equipment in the area for kids at play.

After a pile of research including consultation with Parks Canada, we're thrilled to announce plans for a new playground at the Narrows to accommodate three needs: accessibility, activities suitable for toddlers ages 2-5 and activities for kids ages 5-12. Building the new playground is conditional on receiving $30,000 in donations from the community by August 15, 2023. Read on or donate now!

Why the Narrows?

We consulted with Parks Canada about an additional playground location in the Waskesiu townsite. It was determined that the Bears on the Beach and toddler playgrounds on the main beach provided adequate playground capacity in the townsite. Currently, there are no playground facilities along the south shore of the lake.

Playground Highlights

Accessible Activities

Accessible activities include a ramp with rails to an extra wide platform where a Canadian wildlife memory game, alphabet & number maze, steering wheel and a crawl tube can be enjoyed.

Toddlers ages 2-5

Young kids will fall in love with a 6ft slide, leaf climber, double climber with planks suspended from chains and an incredible sand castle activity which promotes cooperative play.

Kids Ages 5-12

Older kids will zip down the 10ft slide and firefighter's pole, scale the molecule climber, balance on the spring mounted wobbly step, use their arms to get across the ring ladder, test their strength on the wheel & twirl overhead wheels and enjoy lateral wall climbing.

Nature Themed

The playground touches on nature themes throughout the design including animal & evergreen tree toppers, moose & evergreen silhouettes, and colours like greens, tans and browns suitable to the natural surroundings of the mature forest of spruce, fir & aspen trees.

Project Cost

total Cost

The cost for Narrows playground equipment and installation is considerable, estimated at $97,122 with taxes. The project is unique though, as it meets three distinct needs for accessible equipment, activities for toddles ages 2-5 and activities for kids ages 5-12.

Impact

If you aren't a frequent visitor to the Narrows, this will be another reason to explore outside of the townsite in addition to swimming, picnicking and hiking. Did you know the Narrows is just a short four-kilometre drive or boat ride from the Paignton Beach day use area? Paignton is often packed with families & visitors. A new playground at the Narrows could help relieve this pressure and add an incredible amenity for active kid-friendly family fun to the area.

Donate Today

Your help is needed to raise $30,000 of the project funds by August 15, 2023. If this target is met, the playground will be built in fall of 2023 (or spring 2024 weather depending). Plans are in place to fund the remaining two-thirds of the project through other sources. Donate today and show your support for the Narrows playground.

The countdown is on!

If donations totalling $30,000 or more are received by August 15 the Narrows playground will be built in fall of 2023 (or spring 2024 weather depending). Support today!

Ball Diamond Improvements

It was brought to our attention that the ball diamond in the Day Use Area is in need of some improvements and we're happy to tackle that along with the Waskesiu Recreation Association. Under consideration is refurbishing the infield by sizing and leveling the baselines. Portions of the outfield likely require some additional soil and reseeding of grass. We'll also repair the backstop and install new bases. This project is expected to take place in spring of 2023.

Why renew Waskesiu's aging recreation facilities?

  • Improves the recreational offering, and reinforces Waskesiu as Saskatchewan's premiere family vacation destination
  • Advances Waskesiu's Community Action Plan
  • Provides an important new revenue stream. Revenue will be shared between donations to the Waskesiu Foundation and improved recreational programs/facilities by the Waskesiu Recreation Association, including the projects listed above
  • Little Al's Mini Golf and upgraded facilities like the Johnny Bower Sport Court are a) visually appealing, safe and available to all ages & levels of fitness; b) provide activities that residents and visitors can enjoy anytime, including during evenings and on "non-beach/lake days"
  • Improved recreation facilities help provide economic benefit to business operators within the Waskesiu townsite and supports Parks Canada’s mandate to increase visitation and revenue
