The Narrows playground was completed in October 2023 thanks to the incredible work of Brennen Mills and the team at Saskatoon Fire & Flood. The company donated the material and labour including the complete site prep, concrete, installation of wooden beams & sand to finish the surface which meant approximately $25,000 in costs were covered, or nearly a quarter of the project amount.
Special thanks to Jay and Barb Beavis, lead financial donors of the project, John Wilks for championing the need for a playground along the south shore, Parks Canada for their support & contributions, and to all the donors and volunteers who made this project a reality.
Accessible activities include a ramp with rails to an extra wide platform where a Canadian wildlife memory game, alphabet & number maze, steering wheel and a crawl tube can be enjoyed.
Young kids ages 2 to 5 will fall in love with the 6ft slide, leaf climber, double climber with planks suspended from chains and an incredible sand castle activity which promotes cooperative play.
Older kids will zip down the 10ft slide and firefighter's pole, scale the molecule climber, balance on the spring mounted wobbly step, use their arms to get across the ring ladder, test their strength on the wheel & twirl overhead wheels and enjoy lateral wall climbing.
The playground touches on nature themes throughout the design including animal & evergreen tree toppers, moose & evergreen silhouettes, and colours like greens, tans and browns suitable to the natural surroundings of the mature forest of spruce, fir & aspen trees.
Did you know the Narrows is just a short four-kilometre drive or boat ride from the Paignton Beach day use area? Paignton is often packed with families & visitors. The new Narrows playground can help relieve this pressure and has added an incredible amenity for active kid-friendly family fun to the area.
The ball diamond improvement project completed in October 2023 was another home run thanks to the help of Brennen Mills and the team from Saskatoon Fire & Flood. Portions of the infield and outfield were refurbished including sizing and levelling the baselines, adding soil and reseeding grass, along with a full replacement of the backstop. Special thanks to Drew and Karen Byers, Brennen and Amanda Mills, and Chris and Deanna Phaneuf for their support of this project.
Waskesiu is a special place and we’re proud to work with you to improve it now and for future generations. Thank you for making a difference!
